#26 - Tombstone, Arizona
Let's now visit the old wild west. Nothing says the wild west like Tombstone, Arizona. Famous for Sheriff Wyatt Earp (who portrayed Kurt Russell in the movie) and his gun slingin' buddy, Doc Holliday (who portrayed Val Kilmer.) Tombstone was also famous for the not so O.K. Corral, The Birdcage Theater, the Crystal Palace Saloon, Boot Hill Cemetery, dust, heat, and lack of electricity or indoor plumbing. I think toothbrushes were scarce as well. There was only one and the whole town had to share it. But I digress.
Tombstone was founded in 1877 by a prospector named Ed Schiefflin. No one believed he would actually discover anything. "Ed, the only stone you'll find out there is your tombstone". Well, he struck it rich when he found silver and he named his first mine the Tombstone. HAHAHA!! That'll learn 'em, Ed! He didn't share any of his silver because they made fun of him. But word got out about the discovery and by the mid 1880's the town was booming. Poor Ed...I guess he did have to share...
The Birdcage Theater was a burlesque and gambling hall built in 1881. You can't have the old west without gambling, whiskey and some naked women! Good times.... Sounds of people singing and talking have been reported in its deserted rooms.
The Crystal Palace Saloon is home to ghostly cowboys who have been seen at the bar. Footsteps and voices are heard late at night.
Strange noises and flickering lights have been seen at Boot Hill Cemetery. The Ghosts are believed to be the spirits of people who died violently or unexpectedly. Most likely from gunfights or hangings.
So the next time you're in Tombstone, pull up a stool at the old Crystal Palace Saloon and share a whiskey with some ghostly naked women and the spirits of dead cowboys! just don't provoke them...you'll get shot...
*footnote*
This is why Wyatt Earp was chosen to play Kurt Russell. He looks just like him! ....Freaky....
