#24 - The Lizzie Borden house: Fall River, Massachusetts
Lizzie Borden took an ax, gave her mother forty whacks.
And when she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty one.
close your door, lock and latch it, cause here comes Lizzie with her hatchet.
Or so the legend says.....But she looks so sweet and innocent! Surely not!
Miss Lizzie was accused of butchering her father, Andrew and step-mother, Abby in August 1892. Andrew was found slumped over on the downstairs sitting room couch, hit 10 times with a hatchet. One eyeball was split cleanly in 2. Nice! Abby was found in an upstairs bedroom, her skull crushed by 19 blows. If my math is correct, that adds up to 19 wallops. Wouldn't your arm get tired? After just 2 swings, I'd say screw it. This axe is really heavy. I'm going to order a pizza and watch tv.
To this day no one knows why she did it or if, in point of fact she really did. Her trial began in June of 1893 and after only an hour and half of deliberation, the jury acquitted her of all charges. Did Lizzie get away with murder? No one else was ever charged and it remains a mystery. I sure didn't do it. I was stuffing my face with pizza in front of the tv, remember?
Strange occurrences have been reported in the house. The sound of a woman weeping, ghostly images of women wearing victorian era clothes. Unexplained footsteps and doors opening and closing . Lizzie's bedroom door refuses to stay closed unless it is locked. Hushed conversations are heard and bedding rumples on it's own. The house was recently turned into a bed & breakfast and museum. You can stay in Andrew and Abby's room or Lizzy and her sister, Emma's room. You can even rent out the entire house for parties! If you don't mind some uninvited guests...who bring axes.....Happy birthday!
*footnote*
During the trial, Lizzie denied burning a dress in the stove and buying cyanide from the local drug store. Ya, that screams "It wasn't me!". She claims she brushed against wet paint and she needed the cyanide to clean a "sealskin cloak." That makes perfect sense! "We find Lizzie Borden not guilty due to fresh paint! And she so totally wasn't going to poison anyone!" I think she got the same jury Casey Anthony had....
