#20- the horseman comes for you!

#20 - The legend of sleepy hollow: Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown, New York

Everyone knows the story of Ichabod Crane - (a direct descendant of Frasier Crane), Sleepy Hollow and the headless horseman. Written by Washington Irving in 1820, it's based on a German folktale set in a Dutch settlement of New York in 1790. Who knows if the story is real or even loosely based on actual events, but it's one of my favorite stories. And perfect for the #20 spot on our halloween countdown. Ok yes...  it does have everything to do with the fact that my johnny played Ichabod in the 1999 movie by Tim Burton. Tim, Johnny and Danny (Elfman)...my dream team of  pure film-making genius! Anywho, let's continue...

Ichabod is a schoolmaster with a really funny name from Connecticut who competes with Brom Bones for the hand of the lovely Katrina Van Tassel, daughter of Baltus Van Tassel. Another guy with a really funny name. In fact, the whole town is full of people with strange names. On his way home from a party at the Van Tassel's late one night, he is chased by the headless horseman. The horseman is believed to be the ghost of a Hessian mercenary who lost his head during an unknown battle of the revolutionary war. Each night he rides into the woods at the scene of the battle looking for his head. I don't think he ever finds it. Ichabod mysteriously disappears and is never seen again. I guess the horseman assumed he had it. Ichabod- schoolmaster and purloiner of heads...That shifty Mr. Crane!

The woods and the horseman's bridge are said to be haunted...."where even brave men will not venture."  I ain't afraid of no horseman! I live with a henchman...I'll take a horseman over my henchman any day....

                             *footnote*
from what I can tell, Sleepy Hollow looks like a beautiful little town...I wouldn't mind living there!

Ya... I am soooo totally moving here!
